Finding truly health-promoting land today has become increasingly challenging as the world has grown more and more toxic. However, this is a critical piece of the puzzle for anyone looking for healing or seeking to homestead, and one that simply cannot be overlooked without significant risk.
Regardless of whether you live in the US, Europe, Australia, a Third World country, or somewhere else, there are a number of different factors to take into account when deciding on a property to purchase. As with most decisions in life, there simply is one-size-fits-all approach. Every person, every family, and every situation will differ.
Unfortunately, unless one has an impressively substantial budget and great flexibility as to geographical location, compromises will likely need to be made. Even with a massive budget and the ability move anywhere, most likely there will still be something undesirable for any property, now or in the future. Some issues are simply unable to be foreseen.
For example, to the best of my knowledge and 40-some-odd-years-of life, wildfire smoke from Canada was never a problem here in the heavily forested, hilly areas of Southern Indiana in the Midwestern US- until 2023. Yet the spring and summer of 2023 not only left me gazing out our windows into a smoky sky for months, it also caused our chickens and rabbits to have health problems. Furthermore, the loss of light substantially impacted tomatoes and watermelon harvests in particular, even necessitating the purchase of an air purifier for our home to help improve indoor air quality. Again, this was smoke from Canada, greatly impacting life all the way down in Southern Indiana!
Due to my personal studies of Hebrew and Greek prophecy, I anticipate such abnormal, never-before-seen events and problems to become “The New Normal” across the world. Thus, know that we can all only do our best with the information we have at our disposal at any given time. Expect the unexpected, and try to view each day as an adventure. Know that no book or consultant could possibly address every possible problem that may arise in the future.
The permaculture way of life attempts to problems into solutions. Tomato hornworms? Pluck the little alien-looking beings into a bucket, and you have free chicken food. Dock growing in your yard? That’s one my favorite medicinal weeds! Dock is high in quercetin, a natural mast cell stabilizer which is wonderful for allergies. Chickens and rabbits alike love tender dock leaves, which also make a decent potherb. The prolific seeds make a nice (free!) flour, or they can be fed to animals, sprouted…. The uses just keep on going!
So, as you can see, even when a problem inevitably arises on your treasured little piece of property, mentality has a huge impact on what happens next. While of course some problems don’t offer clear solutions and may indeed be not only a huge hindrance, but also a health risk, living a fulfilled life is all about perspective, as you likely know if you have already read my book Poisoned: Failed by Western Medicine, Modern Construction, and Corporate Interests.
My purpose in sharing the above experiences is to help you to stay positive when you inevitably discover undesirable aspects to the property (or home) you choose. Simply gather as much information as possible, then make the best decision you can with the knowledge at hand. Hollywood programming today seeks to enslave us to our past, obsessing over past decisions. This is not living!
Gather the information, evaluate it, make a decision, and move forward. With that said, know that information-gathering can be a labor-intensive process, and you may need help with this depending on your available time, health status, and computer skills. That’s perfectly fine.
There are many factors to consider in selecting a property, some quite obvious and others less apparent. Most people would not want to live next to a dump or Superfund site. But what about 5G infrastructure, cyanobacteria, or fungus from a distillery miles away? Price, proximity to naturopathic practitioners, law enforcement, the relative level of freedom, geopathic stress, natural disaster risk, and agriculture in the area are additional factors, along with many more that we will discuss.
With so many variables in play, my recommendation would be to read the information I am sharing in entirety, then return and develop a list of the factors most important to you personally. If homesteading is your priority, then freedom to raise livestock, build a pond, harvest rainwater, and protect your property will likely rank high, whereas if you are extremely sensitive to radio frequencies (as I am), then you’ll likely focus more on cell towers, natural protection from radio frequencies, avoiding wind turbines, and the like.
Only you know your medical issues and priorities, but do keep in mind that your priorities may shift over time. With that said, the next section will begin detailed discussions of the considerations for purchasing healthy land- whatever your purposes may be!
