No, We Do NOT Consent!

We’ve received services from our current electric co-op for nearly 10 years now. Recently we received a note from them on our driveway chain that they would be clearing the right-of-way around the power lines along the road. It was requesting a signature for work to be done the next day.

Since, in order to purchase property, one must accept easements along the road for utilities and the road itself, we’ve never before received notice of this work. Sometimes they just cut branches down near the lines and call it a day. Other times they have trespassed a good 50+ feet into our property cutting down trees. Never have they asked for consent.

So Dave threw it aside, told me about it, and we accepted what we can’t control. A few days later, Dave received a phone call without a voicemail (leave a stinking voicemail!) and a cryptic text as to whether he owned the property at our address. No introduction as to why he was being contacted, who was contacting him, or who the person was representing. This is the new normal. This is today’s professional. These are the types of contacts he receives from people who easily make 3 times what we do annually.

Anyways, long story slightly less long, Dave continued to tell the manager that he does not consent and will never consent, with one reason being my health. The manager continued to attempt to garner consent, eventually stating that he didn’t need our approval since there was a right-of-way.

So what’s this all about? I don’t know, but why offer the illusion of a choice and request a signature if you don’t need consent?

For what it’s worth, the electric co-op at least isn’t creating landslides that make their way onto the roads like the county has been in recent years (for “global warming,” they say). But they are doing a bang-up job of creating wind tunnels to snap power lines/ trees and cutting down vegetation that doesn’t need to be cut down.
