Before even having a property surveyed, you need to ensure that it will meet your needs, now and in the future. If you haven’t already allowed yourself to indulge in a little dreaming, now is the time to do so.
Consider both your current needs and potential plans or goals in developing a rough site plan. Start with the parcel diagram from the local governing body. In the United States, this is typically available for free online via the county GIS.
Grab a ruler, some graph paper, and sketch away! Let’s ponder some key aspects of site planning, some of which we will address more thoroughly later in this course.
Water!
Water is essential for life. It’s best to have two sources of water if possible, as water rights are increasingly limited across the world. Entire books have been written regarding sourcing and storing water, so this will only be a cursory overview.
